Ray’s Fellows has been associated with the plastering trade for over 40 years. The business was established by his Grandfather, Uncle & Father over 70 years ago.

Today, Ray Fellows together with his son Troy run the business as a father and son team, since the retirement of his father Charles Fellows (Senior) and the sad passing of his son Charlie Fellows (Jnr) due to a tragic accident.

“I believe in helping our customers as much as possible.  It’s irresponsible to make a sale without providing the necessary instruction and technical support”

– says Ray Fellows, who still echoes his father Charlie’s sentiment and spirit of doing business.

Ray believes “Even in this age of rapid transformation, you still need to maintain the good ‘old fashioned’ values when helping customers”.

He believes that this attitude has formed the basis of their successful business and partnership over the years with his father and now his son.   Ray likes to spend time with his customers, especially the Do-It-Yourselfers, explaining and showing them how to install plasterboard.

(20), all work for Rosebud Plaster Pty Ltd, a family business established 30 years ago. Charles his brother was also in his last year of apprenticeship, at Holmesglen.

Ray could not have been prouder of his two sons and their achievements, expressing his gratitude to Holmesglen for the training it has provided his sons: “I cannot praise Holmesglen any higher for the help, advice and skills taught at your campus. It has given our two sons Charles and Troy a great future”. (2008)

The logic behind this time-honoured approach is obvious.  “If you look after customers they will always comeback, as well as recommending you to their friends,” said Ray.  “Also, they soon realise that they can save between 40 and 50 per cent on the cost of a job by buying through us direct,”

Our Family and Business History

Business was not always so assured and predictable in the beginning… Ray retells the story from his father Charlie, “When my father and my brother George came home from WWII, the three of us started producing fibrous plaster in the factory in North Richmond,”

Charlie recalls “In the early days there were times when we had to go without wages for ourselves so we could pay the men who worked for us.”  Charlie’s original company, Victoria, Fibrous Plaster, made all its own plaster sheets and cornices, and ultimately went on to become one of the biggest plaster firms in Victoria.  In later years, when CSR introduced Gyprock® wall board, the firm brought it for resale.

Ray joined the plastering business in 1976 and Rosebud Plaster Pty Ltd was formed, opening at its current location in the Dromana Industrial Estate in Dromana.  Ray became responsible for quoting and selling plasterboard on site, while Charlie retained control over the estimation and supervision of jobs until his retirement.  The father-son partnership worked well because “we’re best mates”, Ray recalls.

As a young man Charlie was a footballer, who played for Richmond Districts and took up golf at age of 45  and played regularly, teeing off with Ray regularly each week at the Rosebud Country Golf Club.

Ray recalls that Charlie boasting a handicap of eight, and had long given up hope of beating him.  ‘Dad’s one of the club’s straightest hitters,” he said “He just doesn’t make mistake.”
